TRAIL/WEATHER CONDITIONS

Half Way Thru The Week On This Wednesday...

NO rain yesterday or overnight. This morning as of 7:45 a.m., we have a current temperature of 30 degrees. While the sun isn't out just yet, we are expecting to see the sun today, but it won't do much good (warmth-wise) as we only anticipate highs today to be in the upper 40's. However, starting tonight, we'll think those upper 40's are a heat wave, because get ready...tonight a cold front is supposed to move into our area, so if it hasn't been cold enough for you, just wait...we'll be even colder starting tonight throughout the next couple of days. We have received NO rain thus far today.

Starting to sound like a broken record, but oh well...much like the past few days, there is a special winter weather alert for our area as issued by the National Weather Service that we thought we would share with everyone:

Issued by The National Weather Service
Dallas/Fort Worth, TX
6:05 am CST, Wed., Jan. 6, 2010

... AN ARCTIC AIRMASS TO BRING FRIGID TEMPERATURES TO NORTH TEXAS THURSDAY THROUGH SATURDAY...

AN ARCTIC COLD FRONT WILL ARRIVE INTO NORTH TEXAS WEDNESDAY NIGHT AND BRING AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF FREEZING TEMPERATURES TO THE REGION. TEMPERATURES WILL DROP BELOW FREEZING AFTER MIDNIGHT THURSDAY AND SHOULD BRIEFLY RISE ABOVE FREEZING SATURDAY AFTERNOON FOR MOST LOCATIONS ACROSS NORTH TEXAS. GUSTY NORTH WINDS 20 TO 30 MPH WILL ACCOMPANY THE ARCTIC FRONT... WHICH WILL RESULT IN FRIGID WIND CHILLS INTO THE TEENS AND SINGLE DIGITS BY THURSDAY MORNING ACROSS MOST OF NORTH TEXAS. WIND CHILLS MAY DROP BELOW ZERO FOR AREAS NORTH OF INTERSTATE 20 FRIDAY MORNING.

IN ADDITION TO THE ARCTIC AIR... A CHANCE OF LIGHT RAIN WILL BE POSSIBLE WEDNESDAY EVENING... BEFORE CHANGING OVER TO PATCHY LIGHT FREEZING RAIN OR DRIZZLE BEFORE DAYBREAK THURSDAY MORNING... AS THE ATMOSPHERE SLOWLY DRIES OUT. AREAS NORTH OF A MERIDIAN TO HILLSBORO TO ATHENS LINE WILL BE THE MOST LIKELY LOCATIONS TO SEE FROZEN PRECIPITATION. NO SIGNIFICANT ACCUMULATION OF ICE IS EXPECTED AT THIS TIME. HOWEVER... SOME PATCHY LIGHT ICING IS POSSIBLE BETWEEN MIDNIGHT AND DAYBREAK THURSDAY MORNING... MAINLY ON ELEVATED BRIDGES AND OVERPASSES THAT REMAIN WET AS THE ARCTIC AIR MOVES IN. THIS COULD RESULT IN SOME SLICK SPOTS FOR THE THURSDAY MORNING COMMUTE.

RESIDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO MAKE PREPARATIONS NOW. A HARD FREEZE CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO EXPOSED WATER PIPES AND CAN DAMAGE SENSITIVE VEGETATION. OUTDOOR PETS WILL ALSO REQUIRE PLENTY OF SHELTER AND PROTECTION FROM FRIGID TEMPERATURES AND WIND CHILLS THAT ARE EXPECTED THURSDAY INTO FRIDAY MORNING. EXTRA PROTECTIVE CLOTHING WILL BE NEEDED FOR ANYONE EXPECTED TO BE OUTDOORS AT THESE TIMES... ESPECIALLY CHILDREN GOING TO AND FROM SCHOOL. LAYERS OF CLOTHING AND AN INSULATED WINTER COAT AND HAT WORK BEST TO INSULATE THE BODY FROM THE EXTREME COLD.

FURTHER DETAILS ON ANY POTENTIAL FREEZING PRECIPITATION AND THE DURATION OF THE FREEZING TEMPERATURES WILL BE PROVIDED AS THE EVENT CONTINUES TO NEAR.
